2020 shooting guard/small forward Malachi Wideman will be playing his college basketball at Tennessee. Wideman is an interesting prospect not only due to his abilities on the basketball court but also as a four star recruit in football. Football will be his primary focus when he arrives on campus, however there is a strong possibility that the four star basketball recruit will be playing for the Vols basketball team as well. His athleticism and vertical leap are elite while he is expected to be an impact wide receiver at the college level, he can be a dangerous threat in the open court on the fast break. His outside shooting and efficiency have not been great in high school and AAU, but he will mostly be used for his athleticism early in his career, and he has the skill set to be a high level defender on the perimeter.
Coach Rick Barnes has already weighed in on the possibility of Wideman playing two sports and he stated that it is understand football will be his focus, but that he would like to contribute to the basketball team in the off season. Competing for the E1T1 in the EYBL he averaged 8.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 19.4 minutes per game. The talent and athleticism are there to make that happen although that is usually easier said then done when it comes to the history of two sport athletes.
