Breaking down the latest news around college basketball, recruiting, and the NBA

Deivon Smith committed to Mississippi State, giving the Bulldogs their second pickup in the class of 2020. At 6’0″ he appears to be undersized on paper, but once you watch him play it becomes obvious that he is able to play taller than his listed height. A player with plenty of highlight dunks, his vertical leaping ability is elite allowing him to finish around or above the rim despite being undersized. There is work to do in the other areas of his game such as his efficiency when running the point but he has the tools necessary to make an impact in the SEC and that should come with plenty of exciting plays. Smith is ranked #52 by Rivals, #42 by 247 Sports, and #65 by ESPN.

NC State picked up a commitment from 2020 center Ebenezer Dowuona. At this point his game consists of making plays around the basket, but Dowuona is very strong in that area. He has a high motor and intensity to go along with a 6’10” 220 frame that has allowed him to dominate inside of the paint at the high school level. Running the floor has not been issue for the center and his vertical leaping ability is strong leading to many alley-oop dunks, especially in transition. If he can run the floor, do the dirty work inside and block shots on the defensive side of the floor he can be a solid piece for a high major like NC State. Dowuona is an unranked three star by Rivals, #247 by 247 Sports, and ESPN has him as an unranked four star.

2020 center Davion Bradford is headed to Kansas State. Bradford is a beast down low when you consider his age standing at 7’0″ and weighing 260 pounds giving high school teams no shot to stop him once he has position inside. He is not a great athlete running the floor or vertically so he will need to work on extending his game outside of the paint if he wants to fully reach his potential in college and beyond. Even if his offensive game does not become more versatile he will be able to produce bullying his way inside to rebounds and easy buckets around the basket. Having said that conditioning is going to be a major part of his development going forward to be able to keep him on the floor for long stretches of a game. Bradford is ranked #133 by Rivals, #146 by 247 Sports, and ESPN ranks him as a four star recruit outside of the top 100.

Dudley Blackwell committed to Iowa State. Blackwell is an athletic wing that could play either small forward or shooting guard depending on the scheme giving the Cyclones plenty of options when thinking of how to best implement him into the offense. At 6’6″ he has the size that when coupled with his athleticism allow him to guard multiple positions on the floor effectively, which is huge in the modern game with all of the switching in pick and roll situations. Outside shooting will be the biggest question mark and a focus of his development once he steps on campus, but you can never have too many wings that can defend and have solid athleticism. Blackwell is an unranked three star by Rivals, #124 by 247 Sports, and #91 by ESPN.

Anthony Davis added some more news to the NBA China trip, leaving the game with a thumb injury. It is unclear how long this will keep him out or the severity of the injury but with the all of the hype surrounding the Lakers entering the season the last thing they wanted to do was start with an injury to one of their two best players.

Reports surfaced yesterday stating that 2020 four star recruit Kadary Richmond had committed to Syracuse, but apparently that was not the case. Syracuse is currently still viewed as the leader but no decision has been made and he will be considering offers from UCONN, Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgetown, and others. Richmond is ranked #95 by Rivals, #159 by 247 Sports, and #95 by ESPN.

Kentucky held their annual Big Blue Madness season kick off. These types of events are for the fans and usually do not offer much as far as basketball analysis goes, but it does give you a glimpse of what kind of shape the players are in and things of that nature. Highlights are the night are not up yet but we will add them to this post whenever they are uploaded.

Bucks point guard Eric Bledsoe will be out 2-3 weeks with a rib injury. Milwaukee has Jaylen Adams and Frank Mason III currently on the roster at the position and unless the injury becomes more serious the Bucks are not expected to do anything drastic regarding their point guard situation.

Sacramento has signed Hollis Thompson to a contract. Thompson played in the G League last season where he averaged 16.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the Northern Arizona Suns. Previous to last season he has spent time with the Pelicans and 76ers.
